Books briefly noted
No priest, no theologian stood at the cradle of Bethlehem. And yet, all Christian theology finds its beginnings in the miracle of miracles, that God became human. These stirring words are among forty devotions that guide and inspire readers as they move thematically through the weeks of Advent and Christmas, from waiting and mystery to redemption, incarnation, and joy. Supplemented by an informative introduction, short excerpts from Bonhoeffer's letters, and passages from his Christmas sermons, these daily devotions are timeless and moving reminders of the true gift of Christmas.
This book changes me profoundly. Each day I heard more deeply how God loves me, and grew in a strange desire to serve Him not out of compulsion, but in response. This is an excellent advent devotional and a good introduction to the works of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. As I listened I was learning and thank you for the clear teachings. I will listen again. His writings are thought provoking, touching and ever humble. The sole drawback to this audio book, and, to a German linguist, unfathomable and offensive: they chose a pleasant timbre voice without consideration of his German language ability!
The narrator obviously does Not speak German nor did he master any tutorial on German pronunciation! Every time he said Bonhoeffer, a woeful mispronunciation, it was jarring. I wanted to throw my phone at him! I will say that the narrator did a fine job on nuance and the gentle spirit of the writing when speaking English. A fail on German! This is the exemplary biography of Dietrich Bonhoeffer.
Everyone loves Bonhoeffer , conservative evangelicals and theological liberals alike. If you want to get them an actual Bonhoeffer book, go for Discipleship or Life Together. Spurgeon was amazing. All theology nerds get a bit geeked out about Spurgeon. Plus, this set looks great on a bookshelf.
Carl F. Henry founded Christianity Today. I love Karl Barth. True, we have some major theological differences, but I respect him a ton. So…this is wicked expensive. Most of these works are available online now. But we all know reading a book on real paper is 1, times better than reading on an e-reader or computer screen.
